On Friday, June 17th, Volkshotel launches its own engaging film and discussion night in Doka, located in the basement of the Volkskrant building. Under the title DocuDoka every two months an urgent issue in today’s global society will be discussed on the basis of a documentary and discussion with special guests. The first film that will be shown is Gringo Trails, a thought-provoking documentary about the traces that backpackers leave during their travels.

The documentary Welcome to the Smiling Coast: Living in the Gambia Ghetto is selected for the Pan African Film Festival (PAFF), the largest black film festival in the United States. The film by director Bas Ackermann and producer Emiel Martens will receive its world premiere at the festival, that will be held from February 4-15 in Los Angeles.

Last month, from 16-30 September 2014, I attended the 9th Trinidad & Tobago Film Festival in Port of Spain, the capital city of Trinidad and Tobago on the northwest coast of the Caribbean island of Trinidad. I participated in this annual celebration of films from and about the Caribbean and its diaspora in two capacities: as academic researcher and industry partner. My dual lens, zooming both out and in, is part of my desperate attempt to bridge the gap between the world of academia and the world of practice.

Like every year, December was the month of reflection and looking back. It’s a time of annual overviews, selections and lists. Known and lesser-known Dutch people – from politicians to athletes, from writers to musicians, and from fashion designers to ‘oliebollen’ bakeries – all were hoping to be included in some illustrious list. September was the month of the exhaust valve. After the unofficial biography of kickboxer Badr Hari (written by Jens Olde Kalter) became in no time both the most sold and stolen book in the Netherlands, again the question arose whether practicing a fighting sport makes people aggressive. Because, as it turned out in the bestseller, Badr was also outside the ring always a sweetheart.
